Laurel Bank Park |
Toowoomba's World War II history focusses on the war with Japan and essentially is America's war. Its location ensured that Toowoomba played a small but not insignificant role in the ultimate defeat of Japan.
Over the course of two fascinating hours you will explore the remnants of Toowoomba’s war history. Learn of the location of the US navy’s rest and recreation centres for their submariners. Explore the role of local residents in the defence of their city and the significant work of Toowoomba’s own 25th Battalion in defeating the Japanes. Visit two of the last air raid shelters in the city (there were 18) and understand why Leyburn airfield, some 50 minutes SW of Toowoomba, was top secret.
Meeting at Laurel Bank Park (corner of Herries and West streets)and finishing with a cold beverage – most likely the Irish Club in Russell Street – this walk reveals the hidden secrets of a city on the font line.
